Summary
Greenbrier & Russel designed, developed and implemented a data warehouse that allowed the client to capture Website activity data which will be used to generate invoices and reports based on that data. G&R managed the project and completed it in the required, but tight, 30-day timeframe. It selected the technology, wrote the business and technical specifications, built and tested the system, and prepared documentation.

Plan
The client, a start-up, needed to build a system to track activity on the Websites it was hosting, including one with Olympic media clips which it received from NBC’s Olympics Website. G&R also needed to complete the project in four weeks so the system would be ready for the Olympics, even though a normal timeframe would be six to eight weeks. Key steps included designing the system, selecting the technology, specifying requirements, and building and testing the system.

Define
G&R initially selected a prepackaged reporting application to log all hits and put them into a data structure. G&R then developed business requirements, which included specifications for monitoring Web page hits. G&R also defined technical specifications, including necessary hardware and software.

Engineer
G&R built the data warehouse and application on a Sun UNIX server running on an Oracle database platform (version 8i). Informatica’s eSite was used as the reporting application to manage data movement. Business Objects was used to create, display, and manage the reports.

Deploy
G&R developed documentation and, after final testing, the project was completed in the required four-week timeframe. G&R also administered the system until the client was staffed to do so.

“We needed to collect and analyze Web log traffic statistics from hundreds of geographically diverse servers, and we needed the system up and running in six weeks. We didn’t know what products were available. G&R helped us in defining the problem and selecting a product set to do the job. They came in amongst the chaos and helped us quickly get out of the starting gate with a base level system that we are now expanding in depth and functionality.”
